candlelight under moonlight

There are things to be said about sitting by the dying light of a fire on a completely deserted beach, on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Much of the day time was spent paddling a kayak in choppy seas with incessant swells. But we would find a secluded beach in the afternoon, sandy beaches, pebble beaches, beautiful protected crescents backed by thick forests. We would pull up, set up tents, and unroll sleeping bags and hope the ground was flat enough not to cramp our backs. Looking out at flattening seas we would start a fire, and fillet the fish that we had caught that morning and prepare some of the most gourmet meals that camping ever saw. Rockfish and Salmon Ceviche, Risotto with Rock fish, Thai Curry ….one night we even managed to bake a coffee cake for desert! We would sit around the fire, and talk about the things you talk about when you are far from home. Eventually as the fire burned itself to glowing embers we would take to our tents and prepare ourselves to venture out again the next morning.
